Affinity Creative Suite

Most of us already cough up money to Adobe to buy into their creative suite for things like Illustrator and Photoshop or mooch off the school computers, but there are other options out there that work similarly to Illustrator and Photoshop. I would still use Adobe Illustrator for changing  line weights (especially since you can export from Rhino with the layers already saved), but if you are interested in checking out the (cheaper) world beyond Adobe the Affinity Creative Suite is a pretty good option.

Affinity makes Photoshop and Illustrator like programs called Affinity and Designer and they have something like InDesign in the works called Publisher. Like Photoshop, photo lets you edit images, crop out parts of photos, and add special effects. Additionally, Designer works like Illustrator in that you can create vector line drawings that are infinitely scalable. The only advantages of these programs over something like Adobe is the fact that they are much, much cheaper. If you have an iPad, you can buy their mobile version of either app for $20 (the desktop versions are $50 each) and that’s a one time fee instead of the yearly rate that Adobe charges. Actually using these programs feels really similar to using Illustrator or Photoshop and the set up even looks the same. I don’t think either of these apps could replace Photoshop or Illustrator right now with our current curriculum especially because we rely heavily on Illustrator’s compatibility with Rhino, but if you want to branch out with your design options for personal reasons or you primarily use the school’s computers to do your line work, I think this is a pretty cool software to look into. And lastly, if you want to look at some more Adobe alternatives, you could also look at a more established software suite like Corel. Unlike Affinity and Adobe, I don’t think Corel lets you have as much freedom with the way that you can use the software, but it is another case where it has a much lower price than the traditional Adobe products which could appeal to some people.
